Night Shots
Digital photography in the dark
One of the skills that you will covet as you grow into the master will be the ability to take night shots. The contrasts between light and dark can have an allure that is very pleasing to the eye and you will certainly feel very pleased with your efforts when the photographs finally come out. There are certain technical things that you need to watch out for. Make sure that you have a camera that is capable of night photography. These are normally models that are digital and can open the shutter for a significant period of time. The idea time should be between three seconds to half a minute. The shooting modes that you have within the camera should be conducive for the night work. In the night you will not have access to natural light so you need to maximize the little that you have. The Auto A and P tend to bring the images in a darker shade than is acceptable to the professional photographer. Under exposure is the ultimate humiliation for the dedicated photographer and therefore you should use the camera effectively in order to avoid this problem in the first place.
The recommendation is that you use the shutter priority mode and manual mode in order to shoot photographs in the night. The self timer and remote controller can be your friend when you want to take photographs in the night. This will let you press the shutter and avoid the camera shake. Because of the time that you take to adjust the settings for the shutter it is a good idea to purchase a tripod. This will hold the camera steady as you get the right setting. Failure to do this will lead to those horrible blurred images that are the mark of a bad photographer. Some people have recommended the ISO 80 but you can even go lower. You also need to check out the sensitivity of the image sensor so that your images are not crowded when you finish them. You will be required to take some sample shots with different shutter speeds to see how they react before you settle down to the mode that you will be using in the long run. I like to take that extra shot in order to see whether the techniques that I have been using are effective in returning the types of images that I can be proud of.
When you get the optimum exposure for night photography then you need to keep a hold of it so that you can start off with that setting every time that you have this task at hand. However you have to remember that each situation might require different skills. There are certain gradations in the light that you get so that it would be wise to have this within your array of techniques. The idea of moving up and down with the shutter speeds has been found to be fairly effective.
